WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Celebrating the Life and Career of Roberto Clemente
Nueva York Program Series

Roberto Clemente was more than just a baseball player: he was a trailblazer, a humanitarian, and an icon to millions. In 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was selected to 12 All Star Games, won the National League MVP Award, and is a member of the exclusive 3,000 hit club. Off the field, he was famous for charity work in his home of Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries. He died tragically at age 38, in a plane crash, while flying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He was elected posthumously to the Hall of Fame, becoming the first Latin American to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Accompanied by clips from the documentary The Legacy of #21: The Life and Times of Roberto Clemente, experts discuss Clemente's life and career and the debate on retiring his #21 for all time.

The New-York Historical Society's Nueva York series of programs is generously supported by American Express.

Please note: During the New-York Historical Society's major renovation project (from April 2010 - November 2011) the Public Programs series will be presented at the New York Society for Ethical Culture at 2 West 64th Street at Central Park West.
