WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Kicking off the 16th season of the Milt Hinton Jazz Perspectives Concert Series at BPAC, Carla Cook brings a completely distinctive repertoire of music - a beautiful and dynamic soul of a voice that puts a jazz spin on songs which may or may not have been written by traditional jazz composers. As a popular mainstay in the NYC jazz club scene, Ms. Cook has released three critically acclaimed jazz albums: "Dem Bones", "Simply Natural" and her incredible debut album "All About Love", which garnered such a buzz from audiences and press that it received a 1999 Grammy nomination for "Best Jazz Vocal Performance" and the 2000 AFIM Indie Award. In this concert, she performs original music from her albums, but you may even catch some straight-up Duke Ellington along with reinterpretations of music from the 70's, the era that raised her and influenced her as a musical artist. The press has raved her work: "...she can sing, really sing.'Cook can Cook!'" (Time Magazine); "...a potent mixture of emotion and energy" (Washington Post); "a unique and inimitable voice" (Down Beat) and "a richness and range that is beyond most of her contemporaries" (Chicago Sun Times).
