It is 1937. The setting is the exquisite state rooms of the royal residence of Balmoral. The Revolution of 1917 did not happen in Russia, but in Britain, and Balmoral has now become a writers' commune. And so begins Michael Frayn's extraordinary comedy.

Balmoral was written just two years prior to Michael Frayn's Noises Off which is widely considered to be one of the funniest plays ever written. The inspired lunacy and meticulously engineered farce which came to the fore in Noises Off is unmistakably apparent in Balmoral.
