WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Champion of the Verdian tradition Riccardo Muti makes his Met debut with one of the composer's rousing early operas. This story of civilization's encounter with barbarism is explored in a new production by director Pierre Audi. Some of the brightest lights in contemporary design, including Miuccia Prada and the architecture team of Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron (the 2008 Beijing Olympics "Bird's Nest" stadium), have created the costumes and scenery. "Our approach is to stay very close to the descriptions supported by Verdi: destruction, rubble, lagoon, forest, darkness--all in a very naturalistic way," explain Herzog & de Meuron. Ildar Abdrazakov sings the title role, joined by Violeta Urmana, Ramón Vargas, and Carlos Alvarez.
Sung in Italian with Met Titles in English, German, and Spanish.

RE:Attila
We see about 10 operas each year. We are Metropolitan Opera subscribers and supporters.
We did not like this opera. It dragged and never reached any high and/or interesting levels, which most operas do. We love Verdi, but this opera did not deliver anything for us. We would not recommend seeing this opera, but definitely would recommend trying more operas at the Met.

First, let's get to the truly good news about the first production ever of Giuseppe Verdi's 1846 Attila at the Metropolitan Opera. As conducted by Riccardo Muti -- in what is an unusually delayed debut by a major conductor -- the early work is bright, vigorous, and rousing. And as Muti has guided Attila often, he knows the opus inside-out and makes certain its martial atmosphere pulses unceasingly. Under his baton, the Met Orchestra sounds as persuasive as it does at its best.
The less-than-good news is the production itself, directed by Pierre Audi with not inappropriate stateliness. Unfortunately, it eventually becomes so static that it gives the incorrect impression that the item on v[...]
