WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Anyone Can Whistle, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents' 1964 experimental satire of any and every target on the American cultural scene of the moment - conformity, psychology, race relations, greed, religion and politics - divided the critics, thrilled the emerging counter-culture, baffled the masses and closed after a brief run, becoming an instant legend that has grown over the years as Sondheim's reputation has soared. The title song and "With So Little to Be Sure Of" have survived as cabaret classics, but the rarely-heard complete score is a riot of jazzy, show-biz razzmatazz, waltzes, gospel numbers and Broadway pastiche, as full of variety and surprise as the show that gave it birth. Anyone Can Whistle opened on Apr 4, 1964 at the Majestic Theatre, starring Angela Lansbury, Lee Remick and Harry Guardino, directed by Arthur Laurents, and ran for 12 previews and 9 performances.

RE:A FINE "WHISTLE" AT ENCORES
This was a fine reading of the 1964 failure that has become a cult classic. I was at the closing night of that first production when I was in college and loved it wartsand all. The score is still wonderful and and the casting of this Encores production was just about perfect . While it didnt erase my memories of the 1964 original, it was very much worth doing again, and it was great to hear the score played with the original orchestrations. Warts and all, this was a memorable occasion and Encores deserves alot of credit for letting us see it again.

Even after 46 years, Anyone Can Whistle, with book by Arthur Laurents and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, still feels unabashedly and joyously experimental. The show has strengths and weaknesses galore, and on some levels, one of its messages -- that conformity should be avoided at all costs -- seems to demand that it contain both.
What's marvelous is not just that Whistle is being presented by City Center Encores! through Sunday (which just happens to be the anniversary of the show's closing after nine performances in 1964), but that director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw has delivered a spirited production headlined by a trio of pitch-perfect artists, all of whom fearlessly dive i[...]
