Tony-winning collaborators Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey will pen a musical version of the 2007 film The Visitor, producer Aaron Harnick has announced. The Broadway-bound production will have a private industry reading this December.

First released in 2008, The Visitor starred Richard Jenkins as Walter, a widowed economics professor who arrives at his old apartment in Manhattan to find a young, unmarried couple living there. When Tarek, an illegal immigrant from Syria is arrested for jumping a turnstile, Walter takes it upon himself to help prevent his deportation from the United States.

No casting, creative team members, or production timeline was announced. The film version of The Visitor was written and directed by Thomas McCarthy. Jenkins received an Academy Award nomination for his performance. Kitt and Yorkey are the authors of the musicals Next to Normal and If/Then, which currently runs in a production starring Idina Menzel at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway.
