The ogre has outrun the beast. According to Dramatics magazine's annual list, Shrek The Musical has overtaken Disney's Beauty and the Beast as the most produced musical in U.S. high schools, unseating the Disney classic after a six-year streak.

The Thespian Society's 4,500 member schools and select unaffiliated schools participate in the annual survey, listing the most frequently produced full-length plays, short plays, and musicals in high schools throughout the country.

Based on the popular 2001 DreamWorks film, Shrek features Tony-nominated music by Jeanine Tesori and a Tony-nominated book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. The musical debuted on Broadway in 2008 at the Broadway Theatre and starred Sutton Foster, Brian d'Arcy James, Christopher Sieber, and Daniel Breaker.
