Broadway Artist Robert DeMichiell Has Died

DeMichiell created key artwork for several shows, including the 2004 Broadway revival of ”La Cage aux Folles”.

Theatrical artist Robert Lawrence DeMichiell Jr. died Monday, October 12, after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 57.

Born May 2, 1958, in Portland, Maine, DeMichiell graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1980. He was responsible for creating the signature art for several Broadway and off-Broadway shows, including the 1984 revival of Oliver!, the 1986 revival of Arsenic and Old Lace, Paul Rudnick's The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, and the 2004 revival of La Cage aux Folles.

DeMichiell also created several posters for Broadway Cares and its annual events, like Broadway Barks and the Broadway Flea Market. His work has been seen in the New York Times, the New Yorker, and Entertainment Weekly.

On March 25, 2012, DeMichiell married Jeffrey M. Wilson, a partner in the producing organization 101 Productions. He is survived by his mother, Nan, sisters Lynn Lynch and Gail DeMichiell, nephews Matthew and David Lynch, and niece Jessica Harran. He is predeceased by his father, Robert DeMichiell Sr., who died in 2014.
