The York Theatre Company has announced that Tony Award-winning director and lyricist Richard Maltby Jr. has assumed the role of MacMillan in Big, the company's season opener to its fall 2014 Musicals in Mufti series.

Inspired by the 1988 Tom Hanks film of the same title, the musical features a book by John Weidman, lyrics by Maltby, and music by David Shire. Maltby takes over the role for Walter Charles, who left the production because of an unexpected conflict.

Directed by Michael Unger, with musical direction by Eric Svejcar, the Mufti presentation marks the New York premiere of a significantly revised version of the show, with eight brand-new Maltby and Shire songs, created for the musical's national tour.

The cast includes Tony Award nominees John Tartaglia (Avenue Q) and Kerry Butler (Hairspray), with Elainey Bass, Whitney Brandt, Trista Dollison, Liam Forde, Tom Lucca, James Ludwig, Rhyn McLemore, Janet Metz, Julianna Rigoglioso, Jeremy Shinder, and Hayden Wall. Performances run through October 19.
