Marin Mazzie Makes Her Own Kind of Music

The Tony nominee pays tribute to the music of the ’60s in her new concert.

Three-time Tony Award nominee Marin Mazzie is getting ready to transport audiences at 54 Below to the 1960s and 1970s. Music from that era will populate her new concert show, which is scheduled to run at the nightclub from February 4-7.

"It's a little nostalgia trip back to the music that influenced me when I was a kid growing up in Illinois," Mazzie said at a recent press preview. "It's all music that I listened to on the radio, music that I sang in my bedroom but have never sung anywhere else."

Audiences can expect to hear tunes by Carly Simon, Dusty Springfield, The Monkees, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and The Mamas and the Papas, among others.

While Mazzie is perhaps best known for her roles in Bullets Over Broadway, Kiss Me, Kate, and Ragtime, her concerts will not feature showtunes (though there is a Cole Porter song thrown in for good measure). While she's not adverse to an evening of Broadway songs, this evening is all about the music that made Mazzie who she is. "When you start making your living doing Broadway shows, that's what you end up singing," she notes. "I love that music, but this is all music that I really love, too."

One such example is "Make Your Own Kind of Music," a hit for Mama Cass Elliot, which you can watch Mazzie sing below.
