The Broadway production of Disney's The Lion King celebrated its 17th anniversary with a cake presentation onstage at the Minskoff Theatre on November 11. Julie Taymor's production, with a score by Elton John and Tim Rice and a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi, opened November 13, 1997, at the New Amsterdam Theatre, before transferring to the Minskoff in 2006. The musical, inspired by the 1994 film of the same title, has since played over 7,000 performances and recently became the highest-grossing property in the history of the entertainment industry.
