Two-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane will return to the hit Broadway revival of Terrence McNally's It's Only a Play beginning March 31 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Lane is set to reprise his performance as acerbic actor James Wicker through the production's June 7 closing date. Martin Short, who currently plays the role, departs the company on March 29.

Lane originated the part of James Wicker when the Jack O'Brien-helmed comedy officially opened on October 9, 2014, at the Schoenfeld Theatre. He left the cast to star as Theodore Hickman in Robert Falls' acclaimed revival of The Iceman Cometh, which is currently running through March 15 at the BAM Harvey Theater. He will rejoin a company that includes Matthew Broderick, F. Murray Abraham, Stockard Channing, Katie Finneran, Maulik Pancholy, and Micah Stock.

With Lane and Broderick leading the cast, It's Only a Play recouped its entire $3.9 million capitalization in December. The backstage comedy is set on the opening night of a new Broadway play as its author (Broderick), his best friend (Lane), producer (Finneran), leading lady (Channing), and director (Pancholy), along with a drama critic (Abraham) and a coat check attendant (Stock) await the reviews. The original cast included Megan Mullally and Rupert Grint.

The design team for It’s Only A Play includes Scott Pask (scenic design), Ann Roth (costume design), Philip Rosenberg (lighting design), and Fitz Patton (sound design).
