Tony Award winner Martin Short will officially join the Broadway production of Terrence McNally's It's Only a Play, beginning performances on January 7. Short takes on the role of James Wicker from Nathan Lane, who departs the production on January 4.

As previously rumored, the production will extend its run through March 29 and switch theaters. Beginning January 23, the Jack O'Brien-directed comedy will call the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre home following the closure of Once. It's Only a Play ends its run at the Schoenfeld Theatre on January 18.

Short joins an ensemble cast that also includes F. Murray Abraham, Matthew Broderick, Stockard Channing, Rupert Grint, Megan Mullally, and Micah Stock, all of whom remain in their roles. Lane departs to star in The Iceman Cometh at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

It's Only a Play follows a group of theater professionals as they await the reviews of a new Broadway production at the show's opening-night party. The production officially opened on October 9.
