Latest Ensemblist Looks at Understudies in Newsies and Honeymoon in Vegas

Wallace Smith, Gaelen Gilliland, and Adam Kaplan talk about their Broadway jobs in this new episode.

Mo Brady and Nikka Graff Lanzarone have announced the release of the latest episode of their podcast, The Ensemblist. The 43rd release focuses on Broadway understudies.

Featured on the show are Broadway vets Gaelen Gilliland, Adam Kaplan, and Wallace Smith, all of whom have served as understudies in the past, in addition to taking on significant roles in their shows.

Gilliland, currently of Broadway's Honeymoon in Vegas, explains how understudying often throws curveballs to those waiting in the wings and speaks about the importance of staying grounded whenever one is given the opportunity to step into the spotlight. Kaplan (Newsies) reveals how being an understudy can feel like a heroic feat, and how being prepared early is always key. Smith (a new cast member of Les Misérables) talks about the perks of getting to take over a principal role for a performance and how the understudy rehearsal process is different from a standard rehearsal process.
