The American Theatre Wing honored Tony winner Cicely Tyson at its annual gala on September 26 at the Plaza Hotel.

Tyson won a Tony Award for her performance in The Trip to Bountiful and starred last season in The Gin Game. Her Broadway credits also include The Corn Is Green, Trumpets of the Lord, and Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright. Her many film credits include Sounder, for which she received an Oscar nomination, as well as Fried Green Tomatoes, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and The Help. She won an Emmy Award for her performance in the title role of the television movie The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.

The evening featured performances by Tony Award winners Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple) and Adriane Lenox (After Midnight), as well as Tony Award nominees Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Saycon Sengbloh (Eclipsed), and the Cicely Tyson Celebration Choir, a group formed for this event. The funds raised at the gala will provide vital support for the Wing’s programs, which champion and celebrate American Theatre.
