Bernadette Peters to Receive the Fourth Annual John Willis Award

The Theatre World Awards has previously presented the honor to Alan Alda, Christopher Plummer, and Chita Rivera.

The Theatre World Awards board of directors has announced that three-time Tony winner Bernadette Peters will be honored with the fourth annual John Willis Award at the 72nd Annual Theatre World Awards Ceremony on May 23. The event will take place at Circle in the Square Theatre, home of the current 2015 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Fun Home.

The John Willis Award is given to "an individual whose lifetime achievements and personal generosity to the Theatre Community merit special recognition and acknowledgement." Previous recipients of the John Willis Award include Alan Alda, Christopher Plummer, and Chita Rivera.

First presented in 1945, the Theatre World Awards, founded by John Willis, are given for outstanding Broadway and off-Broadway debut performances. Hosted by theater journalist Peter Filichia, the 72nd Annual Theatre World Awards ceremony will be produced by Theatre World Awards, Inc. Board of Directors.

The 2016 honorees for outstanding performance in a Broadway or off-Broadway production and for the eighth annual Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence in the Theater will be announced shortly.
