Three-time Tony Award nominee Marin Mazzie, last seen on Broadway in Next to Normal, will return to the stage as alcoholic diva Helen Sinclair in Woody Allen’s new musical comedy Bullets Over Broadway, producers have announced. Directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, the production begins previews at the St. James Theater on March 11, with an opening set for April 10.

Mazzie, whose stage credits also include Carrie, Kiss Me, Kate, Ragtime, Passion, and Man of La Mancha, will star opposite the previously announced Zach Braff, Vincent Pastore, Heléne Yorke, Betsy Wolfe, Lenny Wolpe, Nick Cordero, and Brooks Ashmanskas. Mazzie takes on a role for which actress Dianne Wiest won an Academy Award.

The ensemble cast of 29 includes Clyde Alves, Jim Borstelmann, Janet Dickinson, Kimberly Fauré, Paige Faure, Casey Garvin, Sarah Lin Johnson, Andy Jones, Amanda Kloots-Larsen, Kevin Ligon, Brittany Marcin, James Moye, Beth Johnson Nicely, and Eric Santagata. Additional casting is still to be announced.

Set in 1928, Bullets Over Broadway follows young playwright David Shayne (Braff) as he attempts to get financing for his new play. To do so, he must hire Olive Neal (Yorke), the talentless girlfriend of a tough gangster (Pastore), who soon begins an affair with the production’s overeating leading man (Ashmanskas). The musical is inspired by Allen’s 1994 film of the same title, cowritten with Douglas McGrath.

Joining Stroman on the creative team are Santo Loquasto (scenic design), William Ivey Long (costume design), Donald Holder (lighting design), Peter Hylenski (sound design), Paul Huntley (wig and hair design), William Berloni (animal training), Glen Kelly (music supervision and adaptation/additional Lyrics), Doug Besterman (orchestrations), and Andy Einhorn (music direction/conductor and vocal arrangements).
