The Show Will Go On for Broadway’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood

You now have another month to cast your votes. And yes, we know the Presidential election is over.
The Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes’ musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood will now end its Broadway run at Studio 54 on March 10. It was originally scheduled to conclude its engagement on February 10. The production, which officially opened on November 13, is directed by Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis (Harvey).
Based on Charles Dickens’ final, unfinished novel of the same name, this interactive murder-mystery-musical received Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score in 1986. In a twist created by Holmes, audience members are called upon to vote each night for who killed the title character. Theatergoers also decide which character is masquerading as mysterious detective Dick Dashery and which two characters are secret lovers, resulting in multiple possible endings.
The show’s cast features Tony Award winner Chita Rivera (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Tony Award winner Jim Norton (The Seafarer), Drama Desk Award winner Gregg Edelman (1776), Stephanie J. Block (Wicked), Will Chase (Lennon), Jessie Mueller (On a Clear Day You Can See Forever), Andy Karl (9 to 5), Betsy Wolfe, Nicholas Barasch, Peter Benson, Robert Creighton, Alison Cimmet, Nick Corley, Janine DiVita, Jenifer Foote, and Justin Greer.
Warren Carlyle (choreographer), Paul Gemignani (musical director), Anna Louizos (sets), William Ivey Long (costumes), Brian Nason (lighting), and Tony Meola (sound) round out the show’s creative team.
Beginning January 29, the show’s original cast recording will be available online through www.drgrecords.com. The two-disc set will feature tracks not previously recorded for the 1985 cast album.
