Joaquina Kalukango and Bowman Wright to Star in Alley Theatre’s The Mountaintop

Drama Desk Award nominee Joaquina Kalukango and Bowman Wright will star in the Alley Theatre’s production of Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop, to be produced in association with Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater in Washington D.C. The production, to run January 11-February 3, will be directed by Obie Award winner Robert O’Hara.

The two-character play, which won the Olivier Award, is a gripping re-imagining of events the night before the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After delivering one of his most memorable speeches, an exhausted Dr. King retires to his room at the Lorraine Motel, where he encounters Camae, a provocative and mysterious maid.

The production features scenic and costume design by Clint Ramos, lighting design by Japhy Weidman, sound design by Lindsay Jones, and projection design by Jeff Sugg.

Kalukango received a Theatre World Award and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Hall’s Hurt Village. Her other recent New York stage credits include Godspell and Emotional Creature. Wright’s regional theater credits include A Raisin in the Sun, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Piano Lesson, and Fences.

O’Hara’s many directorial credits include Eclipsed, In The Continuum, and Wild With Happy. A noted playwright, as well, his works include Antebellum and Insurrection: Holding History.
