Gypsy of the Year Raises Record-Breaking $4,895,253 for BC/EFA

The 23rd Annual Gypsy of the Year, held at the New Amsterdam Theatre on December 5 and 6, raised an all-time high $4,895,253 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Since 1989, the 23 editions of the annual benefit have raised a total of $49,031,973. The previous fundraising record was $4.6 million in 2009. Last year’s event raised $3.7 million.

At the Tuesday, December 6 performance, Hugh Jackman, Bernadette Peters and Daniel Radcliffe announced the grand total, and also presented awards to the top fundraising companies and best performances in this year’s show.

Jackman was honored with a special award for raising $857,740 in just three weeks of fundraising for Broadway Cares during his run in Hugh Jackman Back on Broadway.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was the top fundraiser in the Broadway musical category, with $325,935. Other Desert Cities raised the most out of any Broadway play, with $77,712. Rent was the top fundraiser in the Off-Broadway play or musical category with $43,300. The Wicked – Munchkinland tour raised $326,902, the most of any national tour.

The company of Billy Elliot took honors for the best onstage presentation while the cast of Mary Poppins was runner-up.
