Actors RIchard Griffiths, Ian McKellen, and Juile Walters were among those named on Queen Eilizabeth II’s annual New Year’s honors list.

McKellen, who earned great acclaim this year for his performances in the RSC’s King Lear and The Seagull, was named a Companion of Honour, a title shared by only 65 members, including Dame Judi Dench and Sir Harold Pinter.

Griffiths, who won a Tony Award for The History Boys and who will return to Broadway in 2008 in Equus, was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire), while Walters, who will be seen as Rosie in the upcoming film version of Mamma Mia!, was awarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire).

Other celebrities on the annual list included pop singer Kylie Minogue, author Jacqueline Wilson, music producer Beresford Romeo, and screenwriter and novelist Hanef Kureshi.
