David Hare’s The Vertical Hour had its world premiere at the Music Box Theater on Thursday night, in what proved to be one of the biggest events of the season. The political drama marks the Broadway debuts of three award-winning actors: American screen goddess Julianne Moore and British stage and film stars Andrew Scott (left) and Bill Nighy.
The gorgeous Kate Winslet, whose new film The Holiday opens this month, congratulated the show’s director: her husband, Oscar winner Sam Mendes.
Hare was joined for the opening by his wife, the world-renowned fashion designer Nicole Farhi.
Another real-life British couple, Rock ‘N’ Roll co-stars Alice Eve and Rufus Sewell, came across the Pond to support their countrymen.
A slew of wonderful women were among the opening night guests. Among them were the legendary Lauren Bacall…
…the beautiful Kate Bosworth, whose new film The Girl in the Park was written by Proof scribe David Auburn…
…the super-sexy Ellen Barkin, who co-starred with Moore in the film Trust the Man, directed by Moore’s husband, Bart Freundlich…
…the amazing Jennifer Jason Leigh, who starred on Broadway in Mendes’ production of Cabaret…
…and the great Kathleen Turner, who won the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress earlier this week for her performance in the revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The Broadway hit will begin a U.S. national tour next month in Washington, D.C.
On Wednesday night, director John Doyle’s new production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Star Raúl Esparza, who made headlines earlier this week with a revealing interview in The New York Times, earned rave reviews for his portrayal of lead character Bobby.
Tony Award-winner Doyle and Company co-star Barbara Walsh, who gives a stunning rendition of “The Ladies Who Lunch,” shared a laugh after the show.
First-night guests included the hilarious David Hyde Pierce, who will return to Broadway in February in Curtains…
…the always glamorous Michele Lee, no stranger to the world of Broadway musicals…
…and Tony winner Michael Cerveris, the star of Doyle’s Sweeney Todd, who will play Kurt Weill in the new Broadway musical LoveMusik, which opens at the Biltmore in May.
We leave you with this exclusive shot of a special backstage visit to High Fidelity. The divine Patricia Clarkson and longtime companion Campbell Scott (second from right) stopped by post-performance to catch up with Fidelity players Jon Patrick Walker (second from left) and Will Chase. Not only is Scott mentioned in the show, but he, Clarkson, and Walker appeared together in the film The Secret Lives of Dentists, and Scott co-stars with Walker’s wife, Hope Davis, in the TV series Six Degrees.
