Theatre Museum to Host Exhibition on Times Square Theatres

The Theatre Museum will present an exhibition entitled Times Square Theatres: A New Century, A New Style, January 11-March 7 at the Municipal Art Society (457 Madison Avenue).

This exhibition explores Broadway theater design from the last Victorian playhouse into the future, through a historical journey reflecting society’s developing trends and values. The exhibition places eight-foot panels, which illustrate 12 different theaters with architectural plans and photographs, around artifacts preserved from them. Among the theaters spotlighted are the New Amsterdam, Shubert, Biltmore, Palace, and Marquis.

In conjunction with the exhibit, there will be a free panel discussion, “What is the Future of Theatres on Broadway” at 6:30pm on Monday, January 29; a lecture entitled “Another Op’nin,’ Another Theatre -Broadway’s Evolution” at 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 21; and a walking tour of various Broadway theaters on Saturday, March 3 from 11am to 1pm.
