Nicholas Martin Extends Huntington Theatre Contract Through 2008

Huntington Theatre Company artistic director Nicholas Martin has extended his contract through the end of the 2007-2008 season. After the expiration of that contract, he will begin a two-year term in the newly created position of Artist Emeritus.

Martin, who was a performer for many years before switching to directing, is in the middle of his sixth season as the Huntington’s artistic director. Among his many successful productions are Dead End, Hedda Gabler, which came to Broadway in 2001, and Butley, starring Nathan Lane, which recently transferred to Broadway. His next production at the Huntington will be Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard in a new translation by Richard Nelson and starring Kate Burton.

Martin has also been represented on Broadway by the 1996 revival of Jean Anouilh’s The Rehearsal and Stephen Belber’s Match, which starred Frank Langella and Ray Liotta. His many Off-Broadway credits include Full Gallop, Fully Committed, Betty’s Summer Vacation, for which he earned a Drama Desk Award nomination, and Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, for which he received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination.
