The Producers Receives Four Golden Globe Nominations

The fortunes of the movie musical The Producers are looking a little brighter today: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has given the soon-to-be-released film four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy). Also receiving nods were Nathan Lane (Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy), Will Ferrell (Best Supporting Actor), and Mel Brooks (for Best Original Song, “There’s Nothing Like a Show on Broadway”). The Golden Globes will be presented on Monday, January 16 in Beverly Hills, California.

The organization also honored Tony Award winners Glenn Close (The Shield), Judi Dench (Mrs. Henderson Presents), and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) with acting nominations, while Tony Kushner is in competition for the Best Screenplay award for the upcoming Steven Spielberg film Munich. In addition, Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow got a Best Actress nomination for her role in the film version of Proof; her co-star Anthony Hopkins, will receive the organization’s annual Cecil B. DeMille Award

Felicity Huffman and Woody Allen, both of whom have worked with the Atlantic Theatre Company, were double nominees. Huffman was acknowledged for her work in the film TransAmerica and the TV series Desperate Housewives; Allen is competing in the Best Screenplay and Best Director categories for his new film Match Point, which also received a nomination for Best Picture (Drama). Other nominees with significant theater credits include actors Kenneth Branagh, Jeff Daniels, Ed Harris, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Laura Linney, Shirley MacLaine, Camryn Manheim, Frances McDormand, S. Epatha Merkerson, Cynthia Nixon, Sandra Oh, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Joanne Woodward.
