Michael Arden, Jenn Colella, and Paul Kandel will star in the Old Globe Theater’s upcoming production of The Times They Are A-Changin’, which will feature the songs of rock superstar Bob Dylan. The musical, which is conceived, directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Twyla Tharp, will play January 25-March 5 and is scheduled to open officially on February 9.

The show’s ensemble includes Justin Bohon, Joshua Dean, Albert Guerzon, Charlie Hodges, Doug Kreeger, Marty Lawson, Tamara Levinson, Jason McDole, Jonathan Nosan, Joseph Putignano, Sean Stewart, Jackie Seiden, and Thom Sesma. The show’s creative team will include Santo Loquasto (sets and costumes), Donald Holder (lighting), and Michael Dansicker (musical direction, orchestrations, and arrangements).

The show concerns a low-rent traveling circus run by Capt. Arab (Kandel), whose wagon hasn’t moved from its location in some time — although not for lack of effort by his ragtag band of clowns and performers. Among them is animal trainer Cleo (Colella), a young woman exploited by Capt. Arab and loved by his son, Coyote (Arden), who longs for a world outside the confines of the family business.

Arden has been seen on Broadway in Big River, Off-Broadway in Swimming in the Shallows and Bare, and in the World AIDS Day concerts of Pippin and The Secret Garden. Colella starred on Broadway in Urban Cowboy and was most recently seen in the Off-Broadway musical Slut. Kandel received a Tony Award nomination for The Who’s Tommy and has also appeared on Broadway in Jesus Christ Superstar and Titanic.

Tharp won a Tony Award for Best Choreography for Movin’ Out and choreographed the film version of the seminal rock musical Hair. She is one of the world’s foremost modern dance choreographers, having worked with such companies American Ballet Theater, The Paris Opera Ballet, and New York City Ballet.
