New York Times Arts & Leisure Weekend Set for January 7-9

The New York Times‘ fourth annual Arts & Leisure Weekend will be held from January 7 to 9, 2005. This national and international celebration of art and culture will be the largest in the four-year history of the event, with more than 1,300 cultural institutions from 45 cities in the United States and 38 cities in Europe set to participate.


In addition, the newspaper will host a series of TimesTalks discussions in New York City, featuring a wide array of arts luminaries in conversation with New York Times critics, reporters, and editors. This year’s headliners include Mayor Michael Bloomberg; actor Bill Murray; musician Josh Groban; actress/comedian Whoopi Goldberg; actors Patricia Clarkson, Susan Sarandon, Kiefer Sutherland, Hilary Swank, and Barry Humphries (a.k.a. Dame Edna); director/choreographer Susan Stroman; historian Doris Kearns Goodwin; and journalists Seymour Hersh and Mike Wallace, to name a few. Theater-related events in this year’s festival include the following:

SATURDAY, JANUARY 8
Romantic Songs: The Way We Are (8-9:15pm). The Hollywood husband-and-wife musical team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman will perform with musical director and accompanist Mike Renzi at the piano. Moderated by Stephen Holden.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 9
Dame Edna: The Glittering Gigastar (10-11:15am). The man behind the “Dame,” Barry Humphries, will be interviewed by Bruce Weber.


Whoopi Goldberg: Tour de Force (12-1:15pm). The controversial star of stage, film, television, and social action will be interviewed by Patricia Cohen.


Susan Stroman: Broadway Visionary (6-7:15pm). The five-time Tony Award-winning artist will be interviewed by John Rockwell

MONDAY, JANUARY 10
John Mayer: A Benefit for Broadway (7pm). The Grammy-winning musician and the chief pop music critic of the New York Times meet for a closing celebration and interview at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (302 West 45th Street). This performance will benefit The Actors’ Fund of America’s Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic and MusiCares Foundation.
