The cast of the Roundabout Theatre Company’s upcoming Broadway production of the Stephen Sondheim-John Weidman musical Assassins has just been announced.

Directed by Joe Mantello, the show will star Becky Ann Baker (Sara Jane Moore), James Barbour (Leon Czolgosz), Mario Cantone (Samuel Byck), Michael Cerveris (John Wilkes Booth), Mary Catherine Garrison (Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme), Alexander Gemignani (John Hinkley), Neil Patrick Harris (Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald), Marc Kudisch (Proprietor), Jeffrey Kuhn (Giuseppe Zangara), and Denis O’Hare (Charles Guiteau). Also in the cast are James Clow, Kendra Kassebaum, Ken Krugman, Anne Nathan, Brandon Wardell, and Sally Wilfert. Robert Brill will design the sets, Susan Hilferty will design the costumes, and Peggy Eisenhauer and Jules Fisher will design the lights. Musical staging will be provided by Jonathan Butterrell and musical direction by Paul Gemignani. The production will begin previews on Friday, March 26, 2004 in advance of an April 22 opening at Studio 54.

The Roundabout’s initial plans to present Assassins on Broadway were scuttled following the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. The show, which explores patriotism as seen through the eyes of assassins and attempted assassins of a number of U.S. Presidents, was originally produced Off-Broadway by Playwrights Horizons in 1990.
