’01 Down, ’02 To Go

Caruso’s New Year’s resolution? To find out who’s resolving what for 2002.

WHAT ARE YOUR RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR?

(Donna in Mamma Mia!)

“Since January 1 is my birthday, I’d always made it a point to not have a resolution; that way, it felt more like my birthday and not so much like New Year’s. Since I’ve been with my husband Joe, though, we have a new tradition. His mother always said that whatever you are doing on New Year’s Eve is a good indication of what the coming year will be, and that seems to be true for us
so far; so our new New Year’s Eve rule is to be together at all costs in a pretty surrounding, preferably involving fine wine and great food.
These are our loves, and we hope to steer the entire year toward the enjoyment of fine things together. After the events of this past year, being together and making the most of every moment is our sole resolution.”

Stephen Schwartz
(Composer)

“I have been sort of swamped with writing my new show, Wicked, and thus haven’t really had time to think of New Year’s resolutions. So I guess the only one that comes to mind is to try to make Wicked the best work
I’ve ever done–and to have fun doing it!”

Brad Oscar
(Franz Liebkind in The Producers)

“My resolution is to get out of my giant walk-in closet tribute to Sanford and Son that I call an apartment. I’ve been in the same place since I moved
to New York.”

(Columnist for The New York Observer)

“My resolution this year is to give up my addiction to Nicorette gum, which began when I resolved to give up my addiction to smoking. That resolution worked, but that was eight years ago. Since one resolution inevitably leads to another resolution and nothing is perfect, I guess the only responsible thing to do at this point–in a fully packed, well-lived, and continually surprising life in which compromise is a dirty word alien to my well being–is to give up giving up anything.”

Paige Price
(Actress)

“I’m putting my cats on diets; they’re over 15 pounds each, and I’ve had it!”

Ruth Williamson
(Actress)

“2002! My God! I never even heard HAL singing ‘Daisy.’ (Is a Kubrick reference too cryptic?) As God as my witness, I resolve in the coming year to complete my play about the late, great Kay Thompson and begin developing a production of it. My research has brought me to Los Angeles and I find myself walking in Kay’s footsteps, meeting her old friends and taking a fascinating journey that continues to open up and enrich my life. The only other resolution I have is to embrace life fully and courageously, even in the face
of terror. To quote everyone’s favorite Auntie, now is the time to ‘Live! Live! Live!'”

Jim Mannino
(Publicist)

“I just went to Costco and bought 300 of those new Listerine melt-in-your-mouth mints for five dollars. My New Year’s resolution is to never have bad breath again for as long as I live.”

(Lucy, Mud Mask, First Saleswoman, First Woman, and understudy to Sylvia in The Women)

“In response to Jim Mannino’s above response, I have to say, what is that? Eating paper for better breath? I don’t think so! One of my resolutions was to refinance our co-op, which we recently achieved due to my
newfound stardom with four minor parts in a Broadway show. Now, my plan is to redo the bedroom and to find a new uplifting eye product. Any suggestions?”

Christopher Gines
(Recently released his CD The Way It Goes; touring with
Our Sinatra, which opens in Malibu in January)

“This is a little dark, but I want to stay conscious of some of the lessons and hard truths I’ve learned this past year. I want to be less influenced by other people’s opinions and recognize that what people say about you is very often more about them and less about you.”

Tovah Feldshuh

(Actress and teacher; offering a weekend intensive, “An Actor’s Approach to a Song,” January 18 through 20; click here for information)

“New Year’s resolution from the character Grandma Ada in Tovah: Out of her Mind!: Reach for the stars…for, if you reach for the stars, you may land on the roof. Reach for the roof, you never get off the ground!

“New Year’s resolution from Tovah Feldshuh: May we learn the balance of courage and caution and may we live bravely and boldly, smack in the face of fear.”
