Conceivable! William Goldman's The Princess Bride Heading to the Stage

The Princess Bride, William Goldman's classic novel that was later adapted into a now-legendary romantic film comedy, is making yet another leap. Disney Theatrical Productions will adapt the work for the stage in a new version based on both Goldman's novel and screenplay.

No timetable or creative team has been announced, nor has it been made known whether The Princess Bride will be a play or musical. The deal was shepherded by Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn, who was involved with the film while working at Castle Rock.

A paean to the art of storytelling, The Princess Bride follows the adventure of Westley to save his childhood love, Buttercup, after she's kidnapped. The film version, directed by Rob Reiner, starred Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Andre the Giant.

The Princess Bride had previously been developed as a stage musical by Goldman and Tony Award-winning composer/lyricist Adam Guettel, but the project was abandoned after a reported rights' dispute between the two writers.
