After Midnight, a revue celebrating the work of jazz icon Duke Ellington and his years at the legendary Cotton Club, opens tonight at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Dulé Hill acts as the evening's Emcee, with the vocal stylings of Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple) and Tony Award winner Adriane Lenox (Doubt).
The revue, formerly titled Cotton Club Parade, which enjoyed two critically acclaimed engagements at New York City Center, also features a 17-piece orchestra, handpicked by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis. The production plans to revive the old-school Harlem Cotton Club's tradition of featuring guest stars, and will present distinguished artists throughout its run. The show also uses Ellington's original orchestrations.
For a seasoned pro like Lenox, this is "just another op'nin' of another show." While waiting for the starry arrivals to hit the red carpet, check out Lenox leading the cast and crew in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade performance of the opening number from the acclaimed 1999 revival of Kiss Me, Kate.
