Tony Kushner Wins the Puffin/Nation Prize for Creative Citizenship

Tony Kushner has won the annual Puffin/Nation Prize for Creative Citizenship, according to a report in The New York Times. The honor, which carries a $100,000 cash award, recognizes artists and others who create socially responsible work and challenges to authority.

Kushner won Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Angels in America. Among his other plays are homebody/Kabul, A Bright Room Called Day, Slavs, and The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures. He also has written the librettos for Brundibar and Caroline, or Change as well as the screenplay for Stephen Spielberg’s forthcoming film Lincoln.

The prize is awarded by The Nation Institute, a nonprofit media center with ties to Nation magazine, and the Puffin Foundation. Previous recipients of the award, which was established in 2001, include Cecile Richards, Michael Ratner, Jonathan Kozol and Barbara Ehrenreich.
