The Public Theater has postponed its world premiere production of John Guare’s A Free Man of Color scheduled for late winter, due to a loss of significant individual funding and a few key donations brought on by the current economic climate. The theater still plans to produce the show next season, according to a statement.

The Public is currently producing the New York premiere of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Road Show, Danny Hoch’s solo show Taking Over, and Mike Daisey’s monologue If You See Something, Say Something.

The theater’s 2008-2009 season will continue with Tracey Scott Wilson’s The Good Negro (March 3-April 5), Christopher Durang’s Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them (March 24-April 25), and Craig Lucas’ The Singing Forest (April 7-May 17 at the Public), as well as JoAnne Akalatis’ production of Euripides’ The Bacchae, to play the Delacore Theatre this summer.
