Bass-Baritone David Pittsinger will play the role of Emile de Becque in the Broadway revival of South Pacific, currently at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, during two upcoming periods (December 2-January 25; March 10-April 12) when Tony Award-winning star Paulo Szot will leave the musical to honor two previously scheduled opera commitments.

Bartlett Sher directs this musical, based on James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific, and featuring music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, and a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. Ted Sperling conducts a 30-piece orchestra performing the original 1949 orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett and dance and incidental music arranged by Trude Rittmann.

Pittsinger has appeared in Metropolitan Opera productions of The Rake’s Progress, Don Carlo, La Boheme, Die Zauberflote and Giulio Cesare, and will appear later this season in New York City Opera’s concert performance of Antony and Cleopatra.
