Wicked CD Goes Platinum; London Production Extends Through June 2007

The original Broadway cast recording of Wicked has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, which means that it has sold more than 1 million copies since its debut. In addition, it is number 1 on Billboard’s Top Cast Album Chart.

Produced by the show’s composer-lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, the Wicked CD features Tony Award winners Idina Menzel as Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible, and Joel Grey as The Wizard.

Wicked is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name. The show is directed by Joe Mantello, and features a book by Winnie Holzman, scenic design by Eugene Lee, costumes by Susan Hilferty, lighting by Kenneth Posner, and musical staging by Wayne Cilento.

In related news, the London production of Wicked, which began performances at the Apollo Victoria Theatre on September 7, will continue through at least June 30, 2007. A new block of tickets will go on sale on December 3. Its cast currently features Menzel as Elphaba, Helen Dallimore as Glinda, Adam Garcia as Fiyero, Miriam Margoyles as Madame Morrible, Nigel Planer as the Wizard, Martin Ball as Doctor Dillamond, James Gillian as Bog, and Katie Rowley Jones as Nessarose. Kerry Ellis will succeed Menzel as Elphaba on January 1.
