Sewell, Stoppard, Turner, et al. Win Evening Standard Awards

Rufus Sewell, Sir Tom Stoppard and Kathleen Turner were among the winners of this year’s Evening Standard Awards, which were presented at London’s Savoy Hotel.

Stoppard’s Rock ‘N’ Roll took Best Play honors over Peter Morgan’s Frost/Nixon and Conor McPherson’s The Seafarer. However Frost/Nixon, which is due on Broadway this Spring, received a special Editor’s Award.

Turner was named Best Actress for her turn in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Her competitions was Sinead Cusack for Rock “N’ Roll and Frances O’Connor for Tom & Viv. Sewell was named Best Actor for Rock ‘N’ Roll; he beat Kevin Spacey for the Broadway-bound A Moon for the Misbegotten, currently at the New Vic, and Michael Sheen for Frost/Nixon.


Other winners include Caroline, or Change for Best Musical, which triumphed over the British premiere of Monty Python’s Spamalot and the recent revivals of Evita and Sunday in the Park With George; Marianne Elliott for Best Director for Pillars of the Community; Best Design for David Farley and Timothy Bird for set and projection design for Sunday in the Park With George; Nina Raine, author of Rabbit, for Most Promising Playwright; and a special award to the Tricycle Theatre for its pioneering work in political theater.
