Old Globe Replaces Lonergan’s Starry Messenger with Taylor and Oberacker’s Ace

The Old Globe in San Diego has postponed its much-anticipated world premiere production of Kenneth Lonergan’s The Starry Messenger, which was to have opened in January 2007 with Matthew Broderick starring. According to a statement, Lonergan had scheduling delays connected to his new film Fool’s Gold, but he is committed to bringing the play to the Old Globe in the future.

In its place, the theater will present Robert Taylor and Richard Oberacker’s musical Ace, to be directed by Stafford Arima for a January 13-February 18 run. The show concerns an unhappy young boy and the aviators of World Wars I and II; it has already been produced this season at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park starring Matt Bogart, Jessica Boevers, and Chris Peluso, all of whom will repeat their roles at the Old Globe.

The theater will continue its season with the world premiere of Itamar Moses’ The Four of Us, directed by Pam McKinnon (February 3-March 11); Amy Freed’s Restoration Comedy, directed by Tony Award winner John Rando (March 3-April 8); Annie Weisman’s Hold Please, directed by Kirsten Brandt (March 31-May 6); August Wilson’s Two Trains Running, directed by Seret Scott (April 21-May 27); and Richard Seer’s production of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (May 19-June 24).
