A new documentary that will focus in part on the creation of the Broadway musical Grey Gardens is being made by legendary filmmaker Albert Maysles, who co-directed the original 1975 Grey Gardens documentary on which the show is based.

The new one-hour documentary, which is still untitled, will explore the making of the original documentary about Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Little Edie, who ended up living in their rundown East Hampton mansion. It will also cover wildly diverse initial reactions to the 1975 film, the cult audience that was built around it, and the state of the actual house now. It will include never-before-seen footage from the original film.

The new film will also document the creation of the current Broadway musical, first presented earlier this year at Playwrights Horizons. It will include interviews with the musical’s cast, headed by stars Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson, and its creative team, which includes director Michael Greif, librettist Doug Wright, composer Scott Frankel, and lyricist Michael Korie. It will be produced by Lora Nelson and Maureen Ryan for Maysles Films.
