Just as the press release had promised, Tavern on the Green was transformed last night into “a dazzling vision of the Austrian Alps with green carpet mimicking the Edelweiss-strewn meadows of Salzburg” to celebrate the home video re-release of The Sound of Music in a two-disc, 40th anniversary special edition that’s laden with bonus features. But the most exciting thing about the party was the presence of Julie Andrews and all seven of the actors who played the Von Trapp children in the phenomenally successful Twentieth Century Fox film based on the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein stage musical. Here’s the ever-beautiful Andrews, enjoying the festivities.
Christopher Plummer, a.k.a. Captain Von Trapp in the film, was not on hand for the party; but, as noted above, the Von Trapp kids definitely were. Here are Charmian Carr (Liesl) and Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich).
Here are Heather Menzies (Louisa) and Duane Chase (Kurt).
Here’s Angela Cartwright, whom baby boomers know not only for her performance as the outspoken Brigitta in The Sound of Music but also for her roles on the TV series Make Room for Daddy and Lost in Space.
Here’s Kim Karath, who played little Gretl in the movie and who has obviously grown up very nicely. (Debbie Turner, who played Marta, was also at the party but, alas, we didn’t get a photo of her.)
And here, making a very special appearance at Tavern on the Green, are the Bil Baird Marionettes that were famously featured in the “Lonely Goatherd” number in the movie. Happy are they, lay dee olay dee lee o!
