The Mambo Kings Announced for Broadway Opening in August 2005

Producers Daryl and Jordan Roth have announced that they will present the new musical The Mambo Kings on Broadway next year. The show is scheduled to begin preview performances on Monday, July 18, 2005 and to open on Thursday, August 18 at a Shubert theater to be announced.

Based on Oscar Hijuelos’ Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love and its subsequent film adaptation, the musical has a book by Hijuelos and Arne Glimcher, music by Carlos Franzetti, and lyrics by Arne Glimcher. It will be directed by Glimcher, with choreography by Sergio Trujillo and musical direction by Kevin Stites. The design team for The Mambo Kings includes Riccardo Hernández (sets), Ann Roth (costumes), Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer (lighting).

The Mambo Kings chronicles the journey of the Castillo brothers, Caesar and Nestor, from Havana in the early 1950’s to the stages of the grand dance clubs of New York City. Before the musical reaches Broadway, it will play a limited engagement at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre from May 24 through June 19, 2005.
