It has been announced that Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre will be bestowed in a ceremony to be held at the Lyceum Theatre on November 14. The honors recognize achievement during the 2002-2003 Broadway season.

Hugh Jackman will present Tony Honors to the rotating principal performers from Baz Luhrmann’s production of La Bohème (Alfred Boe, Eugene Brancoveanu, Jessica Comeau, Ben Davis, Jesús Garcia, Lisa Hopkins, Wei Huang, David Miller, Ekaterina Solovyeva, and Chloë Wright). In addition, cast members of Hairspray will present to the show’s hair and wig designer, Paul Huntley; casting director Bernard Telsey will present to Johnson-Liff Casting Associates; and Marian Seldes will present to The Acting Company.

According to Jed Bernstein, president of the League of American Theatres and Producers, “This new fall event was created to give the recipients of Tony Honors a greater moment of recognition than can be done from the stage of Radio City where there are nearly two dozen Tonys to award. Another reason for the new event is to give additional year-round visibility to the Tonys.” Howard Sherman, interim director of the American Theatre Wing, said that the Tony Honors were created to recognize “theater people and institutions who are not otherwise eligible for Tony Awards. The honorees’ achievements are significant and they deserve their own event.”

A tribute to the Lyceum Theatre, which marks its 100th anniversary this month, will be a part of the ceremony.
