Broadway’s Urinetown to Close on January 18

It has just been announced that, due to impending construction that will affect much of West 43rd Street, the Tony-winning Broadway production of Urinetown will close on January 18, 2004 after 965 performances. The show currently stars Charles Shaughnessy, Carolee Carmello, Luther Creek, Amy Spanger, Spencer Kayden, and Jeff McCarthy.

As of its closing, Urinetown will be the longest running show in the history of Henry Miller’s Theatre, which housed the original Broadway productions of The Vortex, Our Town, Born Yesterday, and The Subject Was Roses. The theater was also the first home of the 1998 Roundabout revival of Cabaret, which is currently playing at Studio 54.

In his September 21, 2001 TheaterMania review of the Mark Hollman-Greg Kotis musical, Greg Bauer wrote, “What this show is about is really beside the point; Urinetown proves that good writing and excellent performances can make any subject smell like a million bucks.”
