Performance Artist Justin Vivian Bond to Star in Classic Stage's A Man's a Man

This production of the Bertolt Brecht play will feature new songs by Tony winner Duncan Sheik.

Classic Stage Company has announced plans to stage a new production of Bertolt Brecht's A Man's a Man starring transgender performance artist Mx Justin Vivian Bond. The play will be directed by Brian Kulick and will feature a new score and new songs by Tony Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik.

Bond will play Leokadia Begbick, a canteen proprietress. The role was originated by Brecht's second wife, Helene Weigel. This early Brechtian farce follows innocent dockworker Galy Gay in British Colonial India as he enlists in Her Majesty's Armed Forces.

Bond is a writer, singer, painter, and performance artist and the author of the Lambda Literary Award winning memoir TANGO: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels. Mx Bond is a recipient of The Ethyl Eichelberger Award, The Peter Reed Foundation Grant, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award for Performance Art/Theater, an Obie, and a Bessie.
