John Fleck’s Mad Women to Play La MaMa in December

La MaMa E.T.C. in association with The Katselas Theatre Company will present the New York premiere of Mad Women, conceived, written and performed by John Fleck. Ric Montejano directs the production, which will be performed at La MaMa, December 2 – 11.

In the piece, Fleck juxtaposes Judy Garland’s drug addled performance at the Coconut Grove in 1967 alongside spectral video images of his mother’s descent into Alzheimers.

Fleck came to national attention when he, Karen Finley, Holly Hughes, and Tim Miller were dubbed the “NEA Four” after their peer-approved National Endowment for the Arts grants were revoked for violating newly passed legislation requiring the NEA consider “general standards of decency” in their administration of funds. The four artists sued the government, with the legal battle that followed placing them at the heart of the so-called “Culture Wars.”

His past body of solo work includes Johnny’s Got a Gun, Nothin’ Beats Pussy, Mud in your Eye, Dirt, me, A Snowball’s Chance in Hell, Blessed are all the Little Fishes, PsychoOpera and I Got the He-be-she-be’s. His other theater work includes PEACE (@ the Getty Villa w/ Culture Clash), Tobacco Road (La Jolla Playhouse), A Perfect Wedding (Kirk Douglas Theater, LA), Applause (Reprise, UCLA), and more.
