Thomas Haden Church, Emile Hirsch, Matthew McConaughey to Star in Film Version of Tracy Letts’ Killer Joe

Thomas Haden Church will join previously announced stars Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hirsch in the upcoming film version of Tracy Letts’ play Killer Joe, according to Variety.

William Friedkin will direct the film, which focuses on the members of a greedy, vindictive Texas clan who hatch a plot to murder their estranged mother to cash in on her insurance policy.

Letts’ other plays include August: Osage County, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award, as well as The Man from Nebraska and Superior Donuts.

Friedkin directed the film version of Letts’ play Bug. His other films include The Boys in the Band, The French Connection, The Exorcist, as well as the 1997 television version of 12 Angry Men. He also co-directed the Los Angeles Opera’s production of Il Trittico.
