Tony Award winner Paulo Szot will play Escamillo in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Carmen beginning on January 5. The production is directed by Sir Richard Eyre.

On that date, Szot will be joined by Anita Rachvelishvili, who will make her Met debut in the title role, as well as Roberto Alagna as Don José and Genia Kühmeier as Micaëla. The production features sets and costumes by Rob Howell, lighting design by Peter Mumford, and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon.

Szot won the Tony Award for his work in South Pacific. A noted opera singer, Szot starred in the Metropolitan Opera production of The Nose and is currently appearing in the title role of the Dallas Opera's production of Don Giovanni.
