Shrek to Close on Broadway January 3, 2010

Shrek the Musical will play its final performance on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre on Sunday, January 3, following the 3pm matinee. At that time, it will have played 37 previews and 441 regular performances. As previously announced, the musical will launch a national tour at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre, July 13-September 5, 2010.

The show, which is based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek! as well as the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek, features book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lindsay-Abaire, and music by Jeanine Tesori. Jason Moore directs, with choreography by Josh Prince.

The musical currently stars Brian d’Arcy James as Shrek, Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad, Daniel Breaker as Donkey, and Robb Sapp as Pinocchio. As previously announced, Ben Crawford will take over the title role in the musical, beginning November 10.

The production features sets and costumes by Tim Hatley, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound design by Peter Hylenski, and music direction by Tim Weil.
