Urban Stages to Present Free On Tour Festival

Urban Stages will present the Urban Stages On Tour Festival: Free Theatre – Open Minds, October 22-November 2, at its home location on at 259 West 30 Street.

The event showcases selections from Urban Stages ongoing “On Tour” series, which brings free theater into the city’s Public Libraries in all five boroughs. The programming is meant to reflect the city’s multiculturalism to diverse audiences.

The two week festival will include Jo Tanner’s solo Madam C.J. Walker, about the turn-of-the century African American inventor and entrepreneur; Rosie, by Adrianna Rogers, directed by Brigitte Viellieu-Davis, performed by Rachel Sullivan, which reveals the true story behind the birth of the independent American working woman and the cultural icon, “Rosie the Riveter”; At the Pole, by Stanton Wood, directed by Shana Gold, performed by Terence Archie, about African-American explorer Matthew Henson; and The Peanut Prince, written and performed by Terence Archie, directed by Tamilla Woodard, about George Washington Carver, a former slave that spent his life doing research on plants.

The programming will also include Around the World for Magda Magellan, created and performed by Dan Kitrosser, an interactive show the incorporates classic stories from around the world; Rhythm and Sound in the Theatre, created and performed by Jon Berger, which shows how percussion is used in theater and in other mediums to tell stories, create moods, and enhance movement; Warriors Don’t Cry, by Eisa Davis, based on the memoir by Melba Pattillo Beals, directed by Trezana Beverley, and performed by Danielle Renee. The work chronicles the true-life story of Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the Little Rock Nine, who marched through segregationist picket lines to attend Central High School, marking the beginning of American integration. Written and directed by Brigitte Viellieu-Davis, Frida Librado (Frida Set Free), will be performed by Georgina Corbo, and tell the story of iconic Mexican painter, activist and maverick Frida Kahlo.

Additional events will include a Halloween party for adults, and a Halloween storytelling event for kids.
