Austin Pendleton to Direct Barbara Eda-Young’s Lillian Yuralia at La MaMa

Austin Pendleton will direct Obie Award winner Barbara Eda-Young’s Lillian Yuralia, to play La MaMa E.T.C., November 13-30.

The play is set on the Lower East Side in 1930, and concerns Lillian, a former star of the Yiddish Theater (or so she says), who takes a drastic action the face of destitution that has her son seeking help from the old man who lives across the hall. Eda-Young stars in the title role, and the cast will also include Ben Hammer as Levy, and John Magaro as Yidl.

Eda-Young won her Obie for her performance of Mrs. Domik in Tony Kushner’s Slavs. Her Broadway credits include A Streetcar Named Desire, Operation Sidewinder, Camino Real, and Death of a Salesman.

Pendleton has been an actor for more than five decades, appearing in the original Broadway productions of Fiddler on the Roof, Shelter, and Grand Hotel, and in the 1997 revival of The Diary of Anne Frank. He is the author of such plays as Uncle Bob and Orson’s Shadow, and he received a Tony Award nomination for his direction on the 1981 revival of The Little Foxes. He received a 2007 Drama Desk Award for being a Renaissance Man of the American Theater. He is currently represented Off-Broadway for his direction of Fifty Words, and will star in the world premiere of Romulus Linney’s Love Drunk in the spring.
