Roger Bart is temporarily out of Young Frankenstein, the new musical at Broadway’s Hilton Theatre, due to back problems. According to a press statement, Bart is responding well to treatment and is expected to return to the show shortly. His role is currently being covered by his understudy, Matthew LaBanca.

The show, which features music by Mel Brooks, a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan based on Brooks’ 1974 film, and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman, will officially open on November 8. In addition to Bart, who stars as Dr. Frederic Frankenstein, the cast includes Megan Mullally as Elizabeth, Sutton Foster as Inga, Shuler Hensley as the Monster, Christopher Fitzgerald as Igor, and Fred Applegate as Inspector Kemp and the Hermit.

The show’s creative team includes Robin Wagner (set design), William Ivey Long (costume design), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting design), Jonathan Deans (sound design), Doug Besterman (orchestrations), Patrick Brady (musical direction), and Glen Kelly (musical supervision).

Bart won the Tony Award for You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown and has also starred on Broadway in Triumph of Love, The Producers and The Frogs.
